The idea
In 1963 Leslie Illsley, Benny Sirota and Jan Thompson signed a lease at Wheal Dream (now St Ives Museum) setting up the Ceramics Workshop, to be known as Troika. They aimed to capture the ‘Spirit of the Age’ ,daring to be different. It was based on unique designs that were innovative, sculptural, artistic and imaginative. Initially producing useful items such as mugs, teapots and the ubiquitous double egg cups, their output was prolific for the small team of decorators. Using their talent and precision skills, they worked tirelessly on pieces made from moulds carefully fettled, using experimental glazes and introducing unusual methods to achieve texture. These ceramic pieces produced in St Ives, ensured that ordinary people could purchase a piece of art for their home. Troika finally reached Heals and Liberty and truly hit the spot of the Swinging Sixties! The smooth glazed early pieces of geometric shapes and textured wares, have endured and are now highly prized across the world.
What we'll deliver
- A Black and White Ceramic Commemorative Plaque to be erected in St Ives at the old entrance to Troika.
Why it's a great idea
The designs and shapes of Troika are unmistakably recognisable but there is no lasting reference to where it all began, and the studio location is all but forgotten. This project will ensure the name and reputation of a ground-breaking ceramics company will have a greater prominence in the Town, acknowledging the enduring legacy of Troika to the British Ceramics Industry. • It will build upon our rich cultural and heritage life in the Town. • It will supports our visitor economy. • It will contribute to a cultural Town Trail associated with other Heritage Plaques. • It will support business through the commission of the work. It will introduce the designs to the next generation who have grown to love studio ceramics again.
Steps to get it done
- securing planning permission
- commissioning the plaque
- installing the plaque on the museum wall
- official opening and Troika event
The project is supported by St Ives Town Council, St Ives Museum, St Ives and Carbis Bay Archive.
