The idea
Cygan is going under the hammer at Christies in London on 5th Sept, with a guide price of £8-12k.
We need you to help us raise £15k in 15 days so that we stand a chance of bringing Cygan to his new home in Leeds celebrating of all things robot related culminating in a 'March of the Robots' in October 14
Wouldn't it be brilliant to have Cygan welcoming visitors & residents alike to Leeds? As our first Robot in Residence, we'd love to see how he stimulates us to create our own robots and acts as an ambassador, inviting robots from around the world to Leeds. Check out http://www.playfulleeds.co.uk for video of Cygan and some playful Leeds postcards
We'd love to have a go at restoring Cygan back to his 1950s glory and to see if we can dance with him as he crushes cans.
What happens If we raise our target but don’t win Cygan at the auction? Be assured your pledge won't go to waste as we intend to hold funds in trust to help build a robot for Leeds, with your involvement we can.
What we'll deliver
- Ask everybody who pledges via a poll where they'd like to see Cygan in Leeds*
- Find a permanent home for Cygan at the end of our celebratory year.
- Try and get Cygan back to full working order with clever technologissts
- Facilitate hosting of Cygan in public places and events through 2013-2014
Why it's a great idea
We're tempted to say 'why isn't it a good idea?' It's great fun, a big adventure, and we'd love for you to join us on it!
We want to explore how technology, creativity and manufacturing plays a vital role in the way in which we go about our daily lives. Cygan captures the imagination, is playful and helps us to tell a story and get people involved in the year of 'March of the Robots'
We want him to inspire people with the aim they will start creating their own robots: as drawings, animations, in cardboard, film, and for real! You name it, we're interested in getting the whole of Leeds at every age being creative.
Technology and Smart City stuff is upon us, and to most of us it means very little. Cygan creates an opportunity to have conversations with people about technology and it's meaning, whilst thinking about how Leeds will develop in the near future.
As robots and robotics will be such a key part of our future, we'd rather welcome them than run and hide behind the sofa.
Steps to get it done
- By harnessing the power of our collective friends, families and networks, what can we achieve?
What can achieve by dreaming out loud? For a pound each how far can we go and how quickly?
